From a Distance….

tape1.jpgI just disconnected from SKYPE, I was talking to my nephew up in Dauphin. He is currently enrolled in the BUNTEP program through Brandon University. He is training to become a teacher…sniff…sniff…I am so proud. He was working on a project and needed some middle years math games. The great thing about SKYPE is that we can have a conversation that does not require paying for long distance, we can see each other, I can surf the Internet, look through my files and immediately send him information. I was able to send him links for great on-line math games plus I was able to send him some of my files of printable math games that he can use. It definitely makes the world a much smaller place but more importantly it give educators a chance to immediately help one another from a distance. We have entered the global classroom where distance is not a factor anymore.

  1. Great testimonial, Brian.
Your observation about distance is very much to the point. The world has indeed gone flat again.
I actually paid for the Skype calling feature that allows me to dial landlines from my Skype program. It cost $30.00 for the YEAR.
There are some restrictions on the use of Skype Out useage. They ask you to voluntarily limit yourself to 7 hours of calling in one day. So far, thank goodness, I haven’t had to test that limit.
I’m forever trying out new applications and Skype is sill the best VOIP application that I have come across. That and all the 3rd party applications that are build around Skype make it incredibly useful.

  2. Hi Brian. I read your blog. Your nephew is lucky. I am looking forward to my son in Montreal setting up a Skype account.

  3. It often makes you wonder how the “classroom” will remain with all the opportunities for education to be carried out in many other ways and places. The mandate to keep kids in a sealed room for a period of time each day to learn a specific subject each day is starting to seem rather archiac.

  4. It’s amazing how we make these tools our own. Your nephew is fortunate to have you for a mentor. I’ve often thought that mentorship in at least the first two years of teaching would make all the difference in the world.

Glen, do you get good quality sound when you call a land line from Skype?

  5. Slow down MAN… now I’m just trying to keep you insight! I’m still attempting to figure out what I need to send you in re: to the bet…

Maybe a new mask? Hmmm! Now there’s an idea. I simply need your home address. No! I am not a stalker, I just believe in paying what I owe.

  6. lol….no worries! If you post it they will come…..another bad pun!

  7. Brian, I have used the skype for the long distance and my brother in Indonesia is getting an account set up so that we can talk over Christmas. This will give us a chance to see each others children. It has been a few years since we connected. Skype is an excellent tool for communication.

  8. What a great opportunity to connect and it’s free! How is the internet service in Indonesia?
