The True Use Of A Blog
Well I finally had the first big use of my school blog. Friday was review day for my Pre-cal class in anticipation of the test on Monday. There were 5 students away. I told the rest of the students to check the blog this weekend for more information about the test. Some of them told me that they would phone, email, or text the ones that were away to check the blog. I posted the review from the class, the answers, and an outline of what to expect on the test. The blog is a great tool if you need to update students with information coming up. The key is to get them to check it all the time for updates. I have learned much from these tools and plan to expand my blog next semester to include all of my other courses since it is such a valuable communication tool.

Good job Brian. I’ve been reading so much positive material about the benefits of using this technology with our students. On Friday I was at an ePearl workshop at the Curriculum Branch on Ness. While I was there I was talking to Cheryl Prokopanko and I told her about your use of the SmartBoard technology. I hope you don’t mind me sharing your Math Blog address Brian. I should have asked you first. My apologies. Cheryl’s with the LwICT team for the K-8 students and she is always very interested to see examples of technology being used in the classroom. I’ve being following your experiences with interest and I’m glad to see you keep it going. Do all your students have internet access at home?

That teacher is doing a great job on the blogs, very informative. I am going to try some of his ideas for the blog.

I am thinking of starting a weblog for my class. Right now I am just trying to think of a good name. I don’t want something that can be hacked into (is that the right word?) by anyone who is not a parent of my students. Since the blog is meant to be read by parents I want it to be secure and I don’t really know if I want just anyone to be able to post comments that anyone can see. Is there any way that the comments can not be visible to others. do you the answer to this and also what is the name of your course blog(it might inspire an idea for mine).

Anyone can have access to your blog since it is public. As for the comments, you can moderate everything that comes through, that way you have control over what is posted. The name of my blog is very simple. Mr. Bolton’s Mathblog, I will get a creative name for it next semester.

I too would like to start a weblog with my students: it can only be considered as a win win win situation for those involved: parents, teachers and students. All problems that do arise: security for one and how to effectively assess (well for Math (no disrespect intended) it can be said that a mark value is easier to ascertain). But if you are going to teach across the curriculum (i.e.) ELA incorporation, then your job has become a wee bit more difficult. But for every problem we do solve, a 1000 are sure to rise, and if this is a universal constant, then let’s get on with the job/task at hand.
Good Job “Birdman”
